YOUTH PROGRAMS

ENCOURAGING CHILDREN & TEENS

Many garden clubs in the Central Atlantic Region of State Garden Clubs (CAR-SGC) and throughout National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) sponsor programs that involve children and teens in the world of nature, inspire their appreciation of its beauty, and engage them in civic responsibility for protecting the balance of plants, insects, water and other natural elements. We do this through a variety of activities at the local, state, regional and national levels.

  • Collaborating with schools and teachers, community organizations and leaders, and youth groups such as scouting and 4-H clubs to develop and/or present programs and activities on age-appropriate topics.

  • Inviting children and teens to participate in state and club flower shows by including a Youth Division with sections in floral design, horticulture and photography.

  • Sharing with local schools and libraries early reader books and accompanying lesson plans that are published by NGC.

  • Encouraging youth gardening by working side by side with students in gardens at their schools and public parks or buildings.

  • Sponsoring contests that encourage children to explore and enjoy various elements of nature.

Youth Contests

Several age-appropriate contests for children and teens are sponsored by NGC and supported on the regional, state and local levels. These include a poster contest, poetry contest, sculpture contest and more. Full descriptions of these contests, including the rules and application forms, are available on the NGC website.
